Telling a good story is a challenge in itself, but the complexity magnifies in storifying scientific ideas and knowledge. A film plot normally introduces a character, talks about his/her struggles or conflicts, how s/he resolves it with a dramatic climax. This plot tries to engage the audience and create a sense of empathy with some character in the plot. The arc of a strong story connects the audience emotionally and/or intellectually. Communicating science using this medium begins with writing a storyline, just like any other film.

Films are often a medium to escape the reality. Adding too much scientific information and details takes away this luxury and puts the audience in a classroom setting instead of the theatre. People retain more concepts this way. Communicating science by triggering emotions like fictional films is also an effective strategy.

Scientists should use the tools of narratives, perspectives, and characters to draw attention of their audience. They can begin with a series of questions: How can I simply explain this piece of scientific information, was there a surprise element in my story or research findings, how can these findings change people’s lives, who would be interested in this information…Sometimes, answers to these questions can provide insights into the ‘hook’ that allows public to connect with and absorb this piece of science. Try creating ‘what if’ scenarios, they can often lead to some great pieces of film and science communication.
